Stelarc’s body of work tests the limits of the human body. His long-running project, the Ear on Arm (2007), is a culmination of decades worth of R&D and experimental surgeries. The ear is partly surgically constructed, partly cell-grown from his stem cells. Stelarc wanted to speak to the Ear on Arm and broadcast what it heard across the world. A microphone was surgically implanted in the ear but had to be removed due to infection.
Still, the original intent lives on. There are future plans of reinserting a mic and enabling wireless Bluetooth and internet connections.
